Important Notice from IROSM: Stem cell therapy is not right for every patient or condition. After an exam at IROSM in Hialeah, Dr. Jorge Gonzalez will tell you whether a treatment made from your own cells fits your condition, or whether another option, including surgery, is the better choice.

What Is Stem Cell Therapy?

Your bone marrow and fat contain a small number of cells, sometimes called stem cells, along with other cells and proteins that play a part in healing. In orthopedic stem cell therapy at IROSM:

  • Cells are collected from your own body, usually bone marrow from the back of the hip bone, or a small amount of fat. The area is numbed first.
  • They are prepared the same day to concentrate the cells.
  • They are injected into the painful area, guided by ultrasound or X-ray.

These are your own cells, not donor cells. To learn how U.S. rules apply, read is stem cell therapy legal in the United States.

What Stem Cell Therapy Can and Cannot Do

What It May Do

For some people with joint arthritis or long-lasting tendon problems, it may ease pain and improve function, especially when simple care has not helped enough.

What It Does Not Do

It does not rebuild a worn-out joint or replace surgery for every problem. Results vary, and research on many uses is still early.

It may be considered for some cases of knee, hip or shoulder arthritis, tendon problems and some ligament injuries. See stem cell injections for knees.

Stem Cells or PRP?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is made from a small sample of your blood and is simpler to prepare. Stem cell therapy uses bone marrow or fat and needs a collection step. In one study of knee arthritis, both worked about the same over two years (see the research below). Dr. Gonzalez will explain which, if either, fits you. See PRP therapy in Hialeah and PRP vs stem cell therapy.

Cost of Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy is usually not covered by insurance. The cost depends on the area treated, the cell source and how many areas need care. Our team explains the cost clearly before any treatment. Read the truth about stem cell injection costs.

What the Research Says About Stem Cell Therapy

  • Bone marrow cells compared with PRP for knee arthritis: A study randomly split people with knee arthritis into a bone marrow concentrate injection or a PRP injection. Both groups improved, and the results were about the same for two years. The bone marrow treatment did not do better than PRP. Anz AW, et al.
