Platelet-rich plasma injections for joint and tendon pain with Dr. Jorge A. Gonzalez, MD, triple board-certified
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is made from a small sample of your own blood. It is injected into a painful joint or tendon to support the body’s own healing response.
At the Institute of Regenerative Orthopedics & Sports Medicine (IROSM), Dr. Jorge Gonzalez, MD at IROSM in Hialeah places each PRP injection with image guidance and tells you plainly whether PRP fits your condition. Se habla español.
Important Notice from IROSM: PRP is not right for every patient or condition. After an exam at IROSM in Hialeah, Dr. Jorge Gonzalez will tell you whether PRP fits your condition, or whether another option, including surgery, is the better choice.
How PRP Works
Platelets are tiny blood cells that help blood clot. They also carry proteins called growth factors that are part of the body’s healing process.
Blood draw: a small tube of blood is taken from your arm.
Preparation: the blood is spun in a machine to collect the layer with the most platelets.
Injection: the PRP is injected into the painful area, guided by ultrasound or X-ray.
The visit is done in the office, and you go home the same day. It is normal to be sore for a few days afterward.
Conditions Where PRP May Be Considered
Knee arthritis and some other joint arthritis
Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
Long-lasting tendon pain, such as hip, knee or Achilles tendons
Some rotator cuff and other tendon problems
Plantar fasciitis
PRP has not helped every condition in research. For example, it did not help people with fresh hamstring strains get back to sport sooner. Dr. Gonzalez will explain what the research shows for your problem.
