Important Notice from IROSM: Your treatment plan is made for you by Dr. Jorge Gonzalez. After an exam at IROSM in Fort Lauderdale, he will tell you which option fits your heel, including when surgery is the better choice.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes. It supports the arch every time you stand and walk. With repeated strain, the fascia where it attaches to the heel bone can become irritated and thickened. Over time the tissue can become worn and weak, and this can be seen on ultrasound.

Risk factors include long hours standing, running, a sudden increase in activity, tight calves, flat feet or high arches, unsupportive shoes and extra body weight.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

  • Sharp pain on the bottom of the heel with the first steps in the morning
  • Pain after sitting that eases a little as you walk, then returns later in the day
  • Tenderness on the inside of the heel
  • Pain after long periods of standing or exercise

Heel pain can also come from an irritated nerve, a stress fracture or Achilles tendon problems. An exam and in-office ultrasound help find the real cause.

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment Options in Fort Lauderdale

Most people improve with simple treatments. Care usually starts there and steps up only if needed. Options at IROSM in Fort Lauderdale may include:

Stretching and Home Care

Plantar fascia and calf stretches, supportive shoes, activity changes and ice.

Inserts and Night Splints

Heel cups, arch supports and night splints that keep the fascia gently stretched.

Physical Therapy

Strengthening the foot and calf muscles and correcting how load is spread across the foot.

Guided Injections

Injections to calm pain and swelling, placed while watching on ultrasound so they reach the right spot.

Minimally Invasive Plantar Fasciitis Treatment at IROSM

When heel pain lasts for months despite a good home program, a minimally invasive option may be considered. At IROSM in Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Gonzalez may offer:

  • PRP guided by ultrasound: PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is made from a small sample of your own blood. It is injected into the worn part of the fascia while watching on ultrasound. See PRP therapy in Fort Lauderdale.
  • Treatment made from your own cells: for some long-lasting cases, a treatment prepared from your own cells (orthobiologics). See orthobiologics.

These are done in the office with numbing medicine. Most people walk out the same day with a plan for rest, stretching and a slow return to activity. Read how image-guided injections improve accuracy. Treatment is not right for everyone, and results vary. Dr. Gonzalez will tell you at your visit if it fits you.

What the Research Says About Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

  • Plantar fascia stretching: In a study that randomly split people with long-lasting heel pain into two groups, a stretch aimed at the plantar fascia itself worked better for pain and function than a standard calf (Achilles) stretch. • PRP compared with a cortisone injection: In a study that randomly split people with long-lasting plantar fasciitis into two groups, those who had a PRP injection had less pain and better function after 12 months than those who had a cortisone injection. Results vary between patients. Peerbooms JC, et al. Positive Effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma on Pain in Plantar Fasciitis: A Double-Blind Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.
