What Causes Neck Pain?

Your neck, or cervical spine, is made of seven small bones stacked on top of each other, with soft discs between them and small joints at the back. Nerves leave the spine here and travel into your shoulders, arms and hands. Common causes of neck pain include:

Muscle Strain

Sore, tight muscles from posture, sleep position, desk work or a minor injury.

Facet Joint Pain

Wear in the small joints at the back of the neck. It often causes a deep ache and stiffness.

Disc Problems

A bulging or herniated disc, where the soft center of a disc pushes out and can press on a nerve.

Pinched Nerve

Also called cervical radiculopathy. Pain, numbness or weakness that travels down the arm. See pinched nerve treatment in Hialeah.

Whiplash from a car accident and narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis) can also cause neck pain. Learn why neck pain spreads to the shoulder and arm.

When to See a Neck Pain Doctor

  • Neck pain that has not eased after a few weeks
  • Pain, numbness or tingling that travels into your arm or hand
  • Weakness in your arm, hand or grip
  • Neck pain after a car accident or fall
  • Pain that wakes you at night or keeps you from working

Go to the emergency room if neck pain comes with weakness in both arms or legs, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, or a severe injury.

How Dr. Erdman Finds the Cause

Dr. Erdman asks where the pain is, what makes it worse and whether it spreads. He checks how your neck moves, your arm strength, feeling and reflexes. He reviews X-rays or an MRI if you have them, or orders them when needed.

Sometimes a small numbing injection is used as a test. If it clearly eases the pain, it helps show which joint or nerve is the source.

Neck Pain Treatment Options in Hialeah

Most neck pain improves without surgery. Options at IROSM in Hialeah may include:

  • Therapy and exercise: a program to improve posture, strength and movement. This is often the first step.
  • Medicine: short-term anti-inflammatory or nerve pain medicine, if safe for you, with a focus on avoiding opioids.
  • Guided neck injections: epidural steroid injections for a pinched nerve, and facet joint injections or nerve blocks for joint pain. See neck injections in Hialeah.
  • Radiofrequency ablation: for long-lasting joint pain that responds to test blocks, heat is used to quiet the small nerves that carry pain from the joint.
  • Trigger point injections: for tight, painful knots in the neck and shoulder muscles.

Not every treatment is right for everyone, and results vary. Dr. Erdman will tell you at your visit which options fit you. If a surgical opinion is the better choice, he will explain why and help with a referral.

What the Research Says About Neck Nerve Pain

  • Most people improve over time: A large study followed every person in one U.S. city who was diagnosed with a pinched nerve in the neck over 15 years. About one in four had surgery. At the last follow-up, 90% had no symptoms or only mild ones. Radhakrishnan K, et al. Epidemiology of cervical radiculopathy. A population-based study from Rochester, Minnesota, 1976 through 1990.
