Tommy John Ligament Tear (UCL)

THE PHENOMENON OF TOMMY JOHN INJURIES
(ULNAR COLLATERAL LIGAMENT TEAR)

There are many factors both genetic and environmental that can make the
ulnar collateral ligament prone to injury. Repetitive stress during activity can
cause micro-injury to the tendon which over time leads to more significant
tearing and subsequent pain.

UCL tears are a common form of sports injury due to overuse at the elbow joint especially in overhead throwing athletes like baseball and football players, but it can also result from a traumatic event. Typically, pain is felt at the inside of the elbow, arm and wrist areas. The most common initial forms of treatments for UCL injuries are resting on the elbow joint and Physical Therapy. For more chronic injuries with significant impairment by pain and loss of mobility, surgery is often considered. However, for patients who are not surgical candidates or fail to obtain relief from their symptoms with surgery, Orthobiologics injections can be an alternative option.

We have seen very good results with Ultrasound Guided Intra-Ligamentous PRP injection for some types of UCL(Tommy John Ligament) tear. Dr. Gonzalez’s outcomes are similar to those reported in recent studies where we have achieved an 88-96% chance of successful return to play and achieve ligament healing.
